To Tattoo?

For a while now I have been considering getting a new tattoo. I love the art and the meaning behind people's tattoos and I think that if you are going to get a tattoo, it should be something that you love to share with other people and reminds you of a particular time in your life or a particular person (that's what they end up doing whether you regret them or not, right?).

My first tattoo, pictured below, my sister and I got together last summer. It was something we knew we wanted to get together for years and one day, we said, "That's it, lets go." We got in the car, went to a tattoo parlor that one of my roommates had gone to years ago, and in under an hour, we were both tattooed. The story behind our tattoo has to do with our childhood when we shared a room and would look out of the window for the moon each night. If we found it, we would do something to the effect of point and shout to my dad or mom, "See the moon?" Now that we are older and moved away, my dad will still text us every once in a while, "See the moon tonight?"  when there is a full or bright moon. I love telling that story and my tattoo will always be loved.

Lately I have been thinking about getting a tattoo. I have a few rules though, before I go through with it--it will be on my body forever, after all. And I take that pretty seriously.
Rule 1. It has to mean something to me that I will be proud to share.
Rule 2. It has to be something I won't feel like I need to hide (wedding, professional situations, etc.). Rule 3. It isn't a fad, or something that I will grow out of: I have to have thought about it for a while.
Rule 5. It has to be something that will look good on an aging body (in my 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's...)

Rule 5 is kind of hard since who really knows what we all will look like with our tattoos in the years to come, so that makes all the other rules much more important. I don't care how my current tattoo will look as 70 year old because it is something that is close to my heart.

For years I have wanted angel wings on my back. I know. Overused, not original, etc. But I have loved the idea of them and I think they can be really pretty and meaningful. My mom loved angels. She used to read us this book "The Littlest Angel" when we were young and told us that you become angels when you go to heaven and you can choose your wings when you get there. I loved that. I would fall asleep thinking of what color I would choose when I got there. That was what got me started on the angel wing idea. I think that this time more than any would be the time. This is the first year that I am really on my own, starting my life, exploring, and beginning to be my own person...to reference Tom Petty, Learning to Fly.

So if anything, I will look back and remember this new freedom and journey...
