In Distressed: a DIY

I have always been a fan of overalls... I have secretly been patiently waiting for them to be acceptable in society again since the 90's. I'm serious. So seeing the new stylish twist on a classic made me very excited and a little skeptical about their stay-worthy-ness. You can walk a fine line between farmer and flattering with these babies, so styling them is key. But I am satisfied that they are okay to wear in public and I may even be confused for being fashion-forward... even though isn't it really 'fashion-backward' (in time, that is)? Well I bought this pair the other day on sale for ATTN: $9.00! And they were a little too clean cut for me so I decided to distress them myself. It is soooo easy and I was pretty excited about how they turned out. I went for subtle tears to make it look like they were worn in naturally. And even if you're not a fan of overalls, you can use these methods to distress any of your jeans.

What I started with...

The tools I used (not pictured: nail file)
I cut small slivers off the tops of the pockets and outer edges of the bib with scissors
The I used the razors to fray the freshly cut edges. You can also use tweezers to pull on the frayed thread
I made a tiny slit in an area and used the tweezers to rub (in an up and down motion) away the vertical thread so the horizontal white thread shows
Pull threads away to open the tear
I used the nail file quite a lot running it over the holes so they looked more natural. I also filed over most of the edges and belt loops on the overalls...continue all over jeans until you reach desired look
Finished!

I'm hoping to try different ways of styling these so I can incorporate them into my everyday style. I'll keep you posted!
